Amber Camille Liggon is a former business executive who was driven by ego and status. Like many ambitious millennials, she went to college, had corporate success, and made great money. Until one day she was fired from her six-figure job. With no savings and $120,000 in student loan debt it wasn’t long before her money ran out and Amber was facing homelessness.

Then, Amber started listening to podcasts. As she listened to other people’s stories of failure and success she realized she was not alone. Over time, she studied these stories and identified the common tools and techniques that would lead to a better life. Amber says, “Podcasts saved my life by giving me the answers I need to become a better person and live up to my full potential.”

One year later, Amber turned her life around and her career. Today she works as a coach, consultant and podcaster spreading her message of compassion and vulnerability. Amber’s mission is to do more good for more people and each week she shares her message on her podcast, Amber on Podcasts.

I’m so excited for you guys to connect with Amber, check out her work and podcast, and follow along as she continues to share wisdom and tools to help you lead a better life.

I'd love it if you'd introduce yourself, what you do, and what you're working on.

Thank you for having me! I love your message and your work and am so honored to be a part of Joy Corner.  My name is Amber Camille Liggon and I am a podcast host, producer, writer, and consultant. Currently, I share wisdom and tools for leading a better life on my podcast, Amber on Podcasts.

How did you get started?

At the end of 2016 I lost my job and had zero savings or backup plan. I entered a bitter job market and after hundreds of applications I still had no prospects and was about to be evicted from my apartment. My money ran out as I searched for answers in podcasts, books, and the internet. I knew I was talented and had skills but I had no way to show people my experience aside from my resume.

I have been a fan of podcasts for years and began listening to them nonstop during my unemployment. Over time, the stories and knowledge I heard started to take hold and guide me in my own life. As I learned and applied this knowledge my life improved, my relationships improved, and my money improved. One month after launching my podcast I started getting job offers regularly.

What inspired the work that you're doing?

Podcasts saved my life by giving me the tools I needed to survive when I reached my rock bottom. This is why I decided to create a podcast of my own to do my part in sharing this wisdom and paying it forward. My life was forever changed because other people decided be vulnerable and share their stories and knowledge. My goal is to do the same by sharing my experience.

I used to be a totally different person. I was driven by ego and status and spent my entire life trying to impress other people. I copied what everyone else was doing, wearing, saying, going, etc. The transformation that I experienced by losing everything and rebuilding my life has made me a better, more loving, and more peaceful person. My wish is for more people to experience the power of growth and change. We are so much stronger than we think we are.

What is your biggest passion? Do you feel like you're living your passion and purpose?

My biggest passion is spreading love, compassion and wisdom to help more people live fulfilled lives. I am living my passion through my writing and podcast. When I am able to serve people by listening, offering help or guidance and being vulnerable I am living my purpose. I know this is what I am meant to do.

What is your joy blueprint? What lights you up, brings you joy, and makes you feel the most alive?

I feel the most alive when I am able to engage and communicate in a way that makes people feel seen and heard. I went through so many years feeling horrible about myself, feeling lost, feeling not good enough. Life is messy and complicated and there are so many people in the world suffering in silence. My goal is to be vulnerable and hold space for those who are looking for hope and searching for love.

It brings me joy to remind people of their strength and unique gifts so that they can be more confident sharing themselves and accomplishing their dreams.

How do you live intentionally? Are there tools/resources/practices that you rely on to help you stay mindful and grounded?

The best tool I have for living intentionally is to remind myself to stay present and focused in the moment. When I notice myself time traveling to the past or future I’ll go take a walk to ground myself and stay mindful. I love to be outside looking at nature and being surrounded by trees. There is real science behind the benefits of walking amongst the trees. It changes us on a physiological level. In Japan this is called forest bathing and is practiced by people of all ages for its health benefits. Walking outdoors for 10-20 minutes will clear my head, reduce stress and anxiety and get me thinking more creatively which almost always helps me answer more questions and solve more problems.

What would your younger self think about what you're doing now?

Oh, boy! I love this question! Younger Amber would be amazed and shocked by what I am doing now. I grew up in an unstable household with a lot of abuse and neglect. As a kid, I always knew I would grow up and build a better life than what I saw as a child. I always knew my life would be better someday but I never imagined it would be this good and I would feel this much love. The younger me had no idea it was possible to feel so much and be in awe of the person I have become. She would be proud.

Do you have a go-to mantra or affirmation?

I am a huge fan of The Five Minute Journal and affirmations are a daily part of this routine. When I wake up in the morning I write down 3 affirmations for that day. Most days they are a variation of one of these 3:

1) Be the change you want to see

2) Listen more than you speak

3) You are a famous author!

The first one helps keep me on my best behavior. It reminds me that I am the creator of my reality and forces me to be accountable. The second one is a reminder for me to shut up and listen. I LOVE to talk so this is a hard one for me. Active listening is a great skill that can change your life and open your eyes but it takes effort. The great news is the more you listen, the more you learn, and I have experienced the benefits firsthand. We can all stand to be better listeners.

The third affirmation is one of my personal goals. I write it in the present tense so I can train my brain for this goal and trick my subconscious into believing I already am a famous author so I do things that a famous author does. I also write this one down 15 times a day to help drill it into my brain. It’s secretly one of my favorite things to do.

What is your biggest dream?

My biggest dream is to bring love, compassion, and wisdom to the world so that more people can live better more enriching lives. I want more people to feel empowered and worthy of living a life of fulfillment and purpose. Sometimes I read something in a book or hear it in a podcast and it feels like it was written specifically for me in that moment. That second something clicks and suddenly I understand something I misunderstood. There are so many people in the world who just need to hear something at the right time to make a difference in their lives. My dream is to build a platform that engages more people so more lives can be brightened and more people can learn to love and connect.
