Happy #SeekTheJoy Tuesday!

On the podcast this week is Olivia Herrick, a Minnesota-based graphic designer and the founder of Olivia Herrick Design.

Olivia has ten years of professional design experience under her belt and she serves her clients in a wide variety of industries every day. Olivia’s number one goal as a designer is simple – to make your life as easy as possible. What she offers is more than just design – it’s peace of mind.

In this week’s new episode we chat about Olivia’s passion for design and where it began, dreaming bigger and why it’s important to let ourselves explore different possibilities and imagine what’s possible, and how she balances her own creativity with the demands of her business. Olivia shares her love for goal setting, how she’s learned to manage her own expectations and allow herself to evolve, the importance of setting boundaries in her business, and how we can shift into a positive mindset when we begin to appreciate the seasons in our lives. Plus, Olivia shares her advice for young entrepreneurs and designers who want to start their own business, we chat about her new book (debuting in 2021!), her biggest dream, and so much more!

I’m so excited to share this week’s inspiring conversation with Olivia, and I can’t wait to hear what you think! Make sure to join the conversation on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter!

I’ve found over and over again that a lot of the most significant things that have happened over the course of my life have been outside of what I ever predicted, wanted, or wrote down on a goal sheet. I try to be open all the time to whatever may come.

Olivia wanted to be a designer for as long as she can remember. As a kid, she remembers creating logos in Powerpoint and pinning them on a bulletin board (I love this!) Olivia grew up with a strong passion for art and design, and she always had the support of her parents to pursue a career in design. She earned her degree from Drake University, and after holding a number of jobs in her first few years after graduation, she eventually landed a job as a Creative Director. Olivia loved her job, but she missed doing the actual design work. Design was something she was doing less and less of as her role progressed.

Eventually she left to start her own studio in 2015. She had the flexibility and creative inspiration she was longing for, but before she left her full-time job she needed to have clients lined up. Running your own business can be a grind full of challenges, and it’s given Olivia a sense of flexibility, fulfillment, and empowerment.

I think it’s really normal to consider whether you’re doing the right thing. I still think about it all the time! I think it’s important to hear yourself out when you have those feelings and not just say no that’s stupid, or you’re never going to do that. You might have these crazy ideas once a year that are all wrong, but in 20 years you might have one that’s right. I feel like it’s really important to unpack those feelings and lean into them.

Olivia is known for her playful, vibrant, minimalist work in both her visual identity and pattern design that she creates. Olivia describes herself as a “chronic creator",” and she designs and shares new work each day. Though you will often find her glued to her computer at her studio, Olivia is also a competitive amateur golfer and enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors.

Today Olivia is the lead designer on every project for the studio and am assisted by her Studio Manager, Kiara, whose primary role is to help guide your project through the design process and make your experience simple, straightforward, and enjoyable.

It is very humbling as a human being to grapple with the fact that you will likely not be what other people think you’re going to be, and you might not even be what you think you’re going to be! That can be a really hard process to walk through every day, and it’s definitely something every business owner has to come to terms with.
