Savannah (S.R.) Atkinson - Author, Treading Waves
Savannah (S.R.) Atkinson
S.R. Atkinson is the Author behind the new book Treading Waves - the latest installment in the Siren Anthology.
The series follows 18-year-old girl Santi as she re-connects with her childhood friend Rogan, who is a mermaid (or "Serra"), and joins him to live under the sea. In Book 3, Treading Waves, Santi and Rogan are still reeling from the tragedy and loss featured in the second book of the series, while they try to fit into their new city of Daris. However, as Santi deals with these issues while training to defeat the Siren Queen Zitja, she and Rogan discover that some outside forces may have ulterior motives. Despite their treacherous relationship, they must stand together to find the truth.
Treading Waves serves as an outlet for Atkinson, a family behavior consultant, to reach out to young readers and show them that no matter your gender, race, or background--or even if you have scales or thorns--you can face any troubles ahead of you as long as you believe in yourself.
S.R. has been a writer since she was a child, finishing her first chapter book in 5th grade about a computer who brainwashed a little girl to take over the world. Since then her writing ability has improved but her imagination has stayed the same.
Weaving tales of adventure, magic, and heart, Atkinson writes real-world problems in fantastical situations. She always makes sure females are heroic and family values are at the forefront.
Born and raised in Utah, Atkinson moved to New York in 2010 to pursue her dream of writing. Surface Tension is Savannah’s second novel and book two in the Siren Anthology. When not writing she plays roller derby as Fancy Nasty for Garden State Rollergirls. I’m so excited for you guys to connect with S.R., check out her latest novel, and follow along!
I'd love it if you'd introduce yourself, what you do, and what you're working on.
I’m Savannah (S.R.) Atkinson originally from Utah but have lived in NY for about 10 years now. I am primarily an author but I also work with families in crisis! Most recently I’ve published my third book Treading Waves and I am so excited to have people read it.
How did you get started?
In Utah I worked at a residential treatment center for teenage girls and I wanted to write something for them that would be helpful, hopefully inspiring, but mostly fun!
What inspired the work that you're doing?
Working with the teenagers I realized that adults are ALWAYS telling them what to do and how to get better but that’s not always the best way for them to learn something. So I decided to write stories for them. My books are real life situations with healthy ways to handle those conflicts but in a fantastical setting with mermaids and magic. But most of all I wanted something fun to read and enjoy.
What is your biggest passion? Do you feel like you're living your passion and purpose?
My biggest passion is working with families in crisis. I love to hear a problem they’re dealing with and work with them to solve it. I love seeing the changes these families make as they work together and overcome the challenges they’re facing.
What is your joy blueprint? What lights you up, brings you joy, and makes you feel the most alive?
I love everything outdoors. Taking my dog for a hike is one of my all-time favorite things to do in my spare time. Blue sky, sunshine, trees, and a puppy are a recipe for perfection, in my opinion.
How do you live intentionally? Are there tools/resources/practices that you rely on to help you stay mindful and grounded?
I am very deliberate in my life. I try to live a very mindful existence. I love to journal and I think it's is an excellent form of self-evaluation. I also love working on improving myself whether it’s just taking up a new hobby or learning a language or skill. I absolutely love to be learning and growing.
What would your younger self think about what you're doing now?
I actually think about this all the time. I wonder if she’d be proud or disappointed. I grew up completely different than how I live now and I wonder if she’d be disappointing that I don’t live in the same way anymore or that she’d just be glad that i am so happy and have found so much purpose in my life.
Do you have a go-to mantra or affirmation?
"If you can’t fix it now, don’t worry about it now." That has saved me so much stress and anxiety about things out of my control.
What is your biggest dream?
This is such a huge question for me because I’m a dreamer. I always have a new idea, a new passion, a new interest but I never lose my old ones. I want to do everything. Some of my biggest dreams, however, are to write all of the stories I have tumbling around in my head and have the world read them. I’d also like to travel the world as see as many new places as I can. And lastly I want to grow old with my husband somewhere in the mountains.
