I’d love it if you’d introduce yourself, what you do, and how everything got started.
Hello!! My name is Caitlin Nystrom and I’m your owner and stylist of styleNmotion, an online clothing boutique for women. I work with 15-20 different artists and brands to curate a mix-n-match, layer-able collection. I love finding everyday styles that make you look and feel fabulous!
How did you get started?
I started as an accessory designer in Ohio. After a few cross-country moves, I found myself in Manhattan trying to squeeze a Mid-West sized wardrobe into my tiny NYC closet. I wanted to keep everything: the botanical maxi dress for a sunset beach dinner, my strappy stilettos for date night, and much-much more! In that moment I realized that I was holding onto pieces I'd never wear again!! If it was a special occasion style or something that wasn’t flattering, I needed to edit.
After a glass of wine (or two!), I purged my closet and was left with 50 comfortable-yet-unique styles that I could layer, mix, and match to create hundreds of different looks. Not only could I see everything in my closet, but getting dressed in the morning was a fun and less stressful event.
That’s when it hit me: I could help other women do the same thing!
What inspired the work you’re doing now?
My personal closet! When I felt organized getting ready every morning, saving time and stress, I knew I couldn’t be the only one! The more I helped ladies pick out their everyday looks, pack for trips, and get ready for special moments, the more I knew I could help.
What is your biggest passion? Do you feel like you’re living your passion and purpose?
Styling women! My over-accessorizing and print-mixing started back in middle school, I’ve always loved fashion, but when I started to help ladies feel confident and sexy, that’s when it clicked! My biggest pet peeve is when someone says “Oh that looks so cute on you, I could never pull that off.” Yes you can! You just have to know how to work it.
What is your joy blueprint? What lights you up, brings you joy, and makes you feel the most alive?
Working in person with my clients! Yes, I’m an online shop for convenience, you can shop from anywhere at anytime, but my joy comes from personal styling sessions and refreshing closets. Learning about someone's needs and teaching them how to look and feel gorgeous for every occasion.
How do you live intentionally? Are there tools, resources, or practices that you rely on to help you stay mindful and grounded?
Self care! I love my business, but balance is key. I love to start each week with yoga, I’m obsessed with sheet masks (Monday, Thursday, Saturday), swear by Rosebud CBD oil every afternoon, and take lots of baths. I actually write my best social media captions in the bath! haha
What would your younger self think about what you’re doing now?
I wouldn’t believe it! I come from a family of entrepreneurs and swore I would never own my own business because of the constant lifestyle. I also said I would never live in NYC and now love it!! My biggest take away is never-say-never!
Do you have a go-to mantra or affirmation?
My friend, Cate McCleery (@lets_make_a_ruchus) makes embroideries, and I have three of her hoops hanging above my desk:
1. Never Settle - for the moments when I need the reminder to never give up and keep pushing and trying new things.
2. Muscle Up Buttercup - for the moments when things are messy and confusing.
3. Swearing DOES help - sometimes you just need to string a few together and get it out.
What is your biggest dream?
This is a tough one for me. I’m such a planner and super OCD, but when it comes to styleNmotion, I’ve been taking baby steps. I should challenge myself to dream bigger, but in this moment I’d love for styleNmotion to be a social media account that ladies look forward to seeing every morning and for them to think of me for any fashion questions. I want to be drowning in DMs!!
