Ep. 33 Innovative, Creative, and Clean Beauty with Bethany McDaniel of Primally Pure
Happy #SeekTheJoy Tuesday!
On the podcast this week is Bethany McDaniel, Founder and CEO of Primally Pure. Primally Pure is a natural skincare line that use's nature's most precious elements to create products that support radiant skin, a healthy body, and a happy self. Bethany's widespread knowledge, innovative formulas, and deep passions drive her to create products that nourish the skin, body, and whole self.
I was first introduced to Primally Pure last summer when I started to use non-toxic and organic beauty and skincare products. I fell in LOVE with their lavender and eucalyptus body butter - it honestly smells like I'm at a spa aka HEAVEN. I was so excited to have this conversation with Bethany, and I can't wait for you guys to hear this episode!
During this week's episode we chat all about where Primally Pure started (in her kitchen!), and why it's so important to make the switch to natural, non-toxic products. We also chat about Bethany's entrepreneurial journey and learning to celebrate the non-linear path, the impact Primally Pure has had on her life, cultivating and maintaining self-love while running a business, joy in her life, and we get a peak inside Bethany's self-care routine.
So, where did Primally Pure begin?
As a teenager Bethany struggled with various skin issues and sensitivities. Acne plagued her for most of her teenage years (I'm right there with her too!) She pretty much tried everything but nothing worked. As her skin journey continued, her family spontaneously started an organic livestock farm in Southern California called Primal Pastures. Her family's journey opened her eyes to a new way of living and caring for our body naturally.
Bethany discovered the power of eating real food and she opened her eyes to a new world of wellness. She was inspired to switch to using all-natural personal care products. Bethany purged her bathroom cabinets of toxic conventional skincare products and began formulating her own replacements with pure, simple ingredients. (I mean, how cool is that!?)
Bethany created all of her products in her kitchen, without any experience in aromatherapy or chemistry. She started with deodorant, and it was a paste made with baking soda and coconut oil. Through trial and error, she attempted hundreds of different deodorant formulations before finally getting it right.
The products she made actually worked better than the dozens she had tried in the past. Her acne cleared up and her skin felt and looked better than it ever had. Even more than that, she enjoyed using the products she made. Bethany started selling her formulations on the Primal Pastures website and was quickly overwhelmed by the positive response she received.
As her products grew at a rapid pace, she made the decision to turn her hobby of creating natural skincare products into a business - and the rest is history.
One of the things that I love so much about Primally Pure is that their products are formulated using real ingredients derived from nature (have you seen the #natureissmarterthanscience hashtag?! Well, that's Primally Pure in a nutshell!) Their products are certified organic and they consult with leading experts in the beauty and wellness industries to create truly safe skincare products that also offer real, recognizable results.
Bethany's career path has been anything but linear, in fact when she started creating her formulations in her kitchen she had no intentions of starting a company. Her passion for health, both inside and out, has propelled her. She's learned to celebrate her non-linear path, something that I think so many of us struggle with. Learning to accept that life and career isn't linear or always conventional isn't always easy to do - but once we do, it's a game changer. I really loved this part of my conversation with Bethany and I know so many will benefit from hearing it.
Bethany and I also chatted a little bit about making the transition to natural deodorant. The idea of switching to a natural deodorant (which is by default not an antiperspirant) can feel intimidating. The truth is, switching to natural deodorant doesn't have to be scary (or smelly!) - and during this week's episode Bethany shares her top tips for anyone who is ready to make the switch.
Expect there to be a detoxification period. BUT it's totally normal. Primally Pure has a great blog post all about making the switch on their website - you can check it out here
For Bethany and Primally Pure, self-care, and taking time out for self-care, is much more than simply skincare. Bethany is a strong proponent of daily baths, taking time to establish a good-for-the-soul morning routine, spending time outdoors, and giving back and serving others.
I really loved connecting with Bethany and having the opportunity to share Primally Pure with the #SeekTheJoy Fam.
