Sandra Shaw Homer

Sandra Shaw Homer has lived in Costa Rica for 29 years, where she has taught languages and worked as a translator and environmental activist. For several years she wrote a regular column, "Local Color," for the English-language weekly, The Tico Times.

In today’s episode Sandra shares powerful and beautiful vignettes excerpted from her book, Evelio’s Garden: Memoir of a Naturalist in Costa Rica. An excerpt from a forthcoming memoir of her life in Costa Rica, Evelio's Garden, was published in Oasis Journal in 2014. Her creative nonfiction and poetry have appeared in subsequent Oasis editions, as well as in several print and online travel and literary journals and on a few web sites, notably Allyson Latta: Memories into Story, and her own blog, WritingFromTheHeart.net.

Her travel memoir, Letters from the Pacific, received excellent Kirkus and Publishers Weekly reviews; a brief inspirational memoir, The Magnificent Dr. Wao, is available as a Kindle Book; and a second travel memoir, Journey to the Joie de Vivre, details two Atlantic crossings on cargo ships as well as a swing through Europe.

It was not long after that experience of another world that I chose to completely uproot and physically move to Costa Rica. Another language, another culture, another country. Even if subconsciously at the time I wanted to open my life up to more experiences of the other. Innately I knew that there was a lot more to be lived out there in the world than I had been allowing myself so far, and I had become convinced that it’s only when we open up completely to the other, that we become most truly ourselves.
