I'd love it if you'd introduce yourself, what you do, and what you're working on.

I’m Helen Joy Butler, Sanctuary Creator and Elemental Space Clearer. I help women welcome themselves home to their soul and precious life through the concept of Sanctuary. I work with clients one on one; through group immersions / workshops; and share my thoughts as an author and on my podcast.

How did you get started?

I started my working career as a Primary School Teacher, and in time found myself working as an Instructional / Educational Designer and sessional lecturer at University. After more than a decade in the education space I left and opened my own business as a Professional Organiser. That business has evolved and I now create Sanctuary for my clients through Elemental Space Clearing, running immersions / workshops and Circles, writing and podcasting, all to help people create sanctuary in their own lives.

After experiencing the heart break of miscarriage in my early 30s, in time I fell pregnant again and nine months later delivered a healthy baby boy. Unfortunately the birth was extremely traumatic on my body, to the extent that the Universe took the decision out of our hands in regards to having any more children.

It was after our son’s birth that my sensitivities, intuition, psychic and empath abilities - traits and abilities I’d pushed down my whole life - were cracked open.

From this moment I travelled my own dark night of the soul for many years. As challenging as it was, the process forced me to discover my truth, with Sanctuary and all it meant to me becoming the conduit I needed for my own spiritual awakening.

What inspired the work that you're doing?

I had (or felt I had) few people around me who understood what was happening as I went through my dark night of the soul. It became extremely difficult to show up and be who I was ‘meant’ to be in the world. I experienced physical, emotional and spiritual symptoms that exhausted, challenged and confused me, and I felt truly alone.

At this time I also felt that who I was and how I was supposed to be in the world were at polar opposites with what my heart was guiding me towards. This was when the concept of Sanctuary came in to guide me, and I was able to fill my toolkit with strategies, people and passions that moved me through and out the other side.

The women I work with are also searching for their unique spiritual truth, wanting to deeply connect with their own inner compass or guidance system. It’s through Sanctuary and the support it gave me toward owning my spiritual truth that I’m able to support them on their journey.

What is your biggest passion? Do you feel like you're living your passion and purpose?

Self discovery, diving deep (the Scorpio in me can’t help it!) and supporting others to do the same is my greatest passion. I absolutely love supporting women to take their own journey to find themselves, when they know it’s time and they’re ready, and I’m SO grateful for that!

What is your joy blueprint? What lights you up, brings you joy, and makes you feel the most alive?

I absolutely love:

  • Creating intention each day, through lighting a candle, meditating, doing a simple sound healing or smudging myself, or drinking a cup of tea as the sun rises.

  • Deep conversations with anyone who’ll have them with me!

  • My son in spirit and my son on Earth. They’ve both taught me so much.

  • A beautiful bunch of flowers on my dinner table.

  • The fact that Joy is my middle name. It inspires me every day!

How do you live intentionally? Are there tools/resources/practices that you rely on to help you stay mindful and grounded?

The amazing thing about the concept of Sanctuary is that I have so many tools, resources, practices at my disposal that I have a huge variety to choose from - all of which I’ve placed in my Sanctuary Toolkit because they work for me. So yes I have spiritual practices, plenty of books, and stacks of training under my belt but the big thing is that I don’t feel pressured to implement every single thing I know every single day!

Through the concept of Sanctuary I share how the infinity symbol helps with living an intentional life. So in regards to helping me stay mindful and grounded, this year I decided to place ‘Alignment’ on one side of the infinity symbol and ‘Intention’ on the other. This process guides me each day to create alignment through intention, and deliberately use intention to help create alignment in all aspects of my life. I see it as a very symbiotic relationship that I can’t (at the moment anyway!) separate.

So at the start of each day I sit with intention, to get guidance on the tasks I need to do that day, to achieve the goals I’ve set myself. It’s a very practical / spiritual connection that helps me move closer to flow in my life.

What would your younger self think about what you're doing now?

I know my younger self / inner child is cheering me on big time!

My inner child as very vocal a few years ago! Together we shared our thoughts, feelings and insights at workshops, on the blog and in interviews about living as a Highly Sensitive / Aware Person in a world which often feels like it’s quite the opposite. We worked together for about 18 months and after that she stepped back. I took this as a sign that she was now happy and we could move on with something else!

Do you have a go-to mantra or affirmation?

Gratitude is always my go-to when I’m feeling low. I ask myself “What are three things that went well today?”. This tends to guide me back into my heart and shift my energy to one of love and acceptance.

What is your biggest dream?

That all women know and fully own their worth, beauty, wisdom, love and grace from a place of deep truth. That they welcome themselves home into their body - their one ‘true’ home - and experience a deep sense of safety, connection and security with themselves and this precious life.

And to live on a house on a hill with a view of the ocean!
